COLUMBUS HERITAGE COALITION
The Columbus Heritage Coalition (CHC), a 501 (c) (4) non-profit organization, is dedicated to the preservation, protection and promotion of the historical legacy of Christopher Columbus. It seeks to combat what have become rampant attacks on Columbus and Columbus Day, the federal holiday which is celebrated by millions of Americans annually, regardless of their ancestry. Initially comprised of 40 Italian American community organizations in the New York Metro area, CHC seeks the support of scores of Italian American organizations around the country in an effort to address misinformation about Columbus, and that criticism of him be viewed in proper historical context.
The Coalition supports an official national day of celebration for indigenous peoples, but not the effort to supplant Columbus Day. It supports the concept of a separate holiday where indigenous peoples can promote their histories, cultures and contributions in a positive way and one in which all Americans can participate.
Galvanized by its victory to have New York City’s famous Columbus statue in Columbus Circle protected in the National Register of Historical Places, the Coalition lobbies all levels of government and conducts news media outreach tin order to duplicate this success in other cities and towns across America.
NATIONAL COLUMBUS EDUCATION FOUNDATION
The National Columbus Education Foundation (NCEF), a 501 (c) (3) organization, is an educational body focused on correcting and clarifying oft-repeated misconceptions about Columbus. It seeks to promote historical accuracy through a network of supporters, scholars and educators across the country, and to monitor how Columbus is portrayed in academic curricula. NCHC seeks to ensure that there is balance and fairness in what students learn about Columbus.
